MYSTERIOUS PEOPLE

"Commander" Barbara Adams

"COMMANDER" BARBARA ADAMS

Back in 1996, when the Republicans were doing their damndest to get rid of Bill Clinton,  the entire world was mistified and amazed by an Arkansas women who wore a replica Star Trek uniform while serving as an alternative juror in the Whitewater trial.

Barbara Adams (31 at the time) was an alternative juror in the trial and wore her Star Trek uniform everyday.

Adams was dismissed as an alternative juror after violating the courts directive not to talk to the media.

ADAMS BOLDLY GOING WHERE NO JUROR HAD BEFORE

Adams, in the interview that got he booted as an alternative juror, told "American Journal" she believes in the ideals expressed in Star Trek. She said she found Star Trek an alternative to "mindless television" because it promotes inclusion, tolerance, peace and faith in humankind.

Adams was featured in two Paramount Picture movies, Trekkies (1997) and Trekkies 2 (2004).

Apparently Adams (now 51) still is trekking along.  In a 2014 facebook post, a man details an encounter with her.

You might be able to catch a glimpse of her by going to the Rodney Parham Road and Breckenridge Drive intersection around 7:00 a.m. or 5:30 p.m. during the week.

 Keith, a/k/a Dirt or Scar

LITTLE ROCK'S HOMELESS WALKING MAN

For more than a decade, Little Rock residents have seen him walking all over the city wearing headphone and sporting a bedraggled look.

A persistent urban legend has him being the son of a famous Arkansas sportscaster, Bud Campbell.  Campbell was killed in one-car crash on Rodney Parham Road, near the Green Tree Nursery, in 1974.  Campbell had a daughter, Debbie and two sons, Buddy and Richie.

Watch the 1974 KATV news story that names Bud Campbell's children

According to people that know him or his family, his real name is Keith and he is from Texarkana. We have not been able to verify that his last name is really Campbell, but when asked by the curious that have approached him if his name is Keith Campbell, he has said yes. Others report his last name is Gibbs.

He often goes hungry because he doesn't fit in well at the homeless shelters/soup kitchens and rarely goes to them. His brother gives him food and money when he can find him, but sometimes he just doesn't know where he is.

He has psychological problems and prefers the streets.

A few individuals have actually approached him and had conversations about his life's story. This is what they found out about him after visiting with him:

His family is not super wealthy. They are well off enough to help him, but he doesn't want help. His brother gave him a mobile home to live in, but he walked out of it back to the streets after a few days.

He's was in a state-run nursing home for a bit, which is why no one saw him for a while. He got severe frostbite on his foot and was unable to walk.

He's actually gotten frostbite a number of times, which is why he walks with a limp. When it's really cold he urinates on himself at night because it's warm (remember, he has some psychological problems), and then it freezes and causes frostbite on his legs and feet.

Elton & Betty White

If you were in Little Rock in the last half of the 1980's you no doubt saw street musicians and eccentrics Elton and Betty White all over downtown.

Both Arkansas natives, they met in 1984 at Little Rock's Union Rescue Mission and despite their 30 year age difference it was love at first sight.  They married in 1989.

Elton & Betty wore sombreros and very little clothing (depending on the weather) and sang sexually explicit songs while playing ukuleles.

Between 1986 and 1989 they couple recorded and released three albums - The Best of Elton and Betty, Sex Beyond the Door, and Hard Deep Sex Explosion - and recorded some 250 songs many of them about their sex life.

You can download mp3's of some of their songs here (scroll halfway down the page).

Elton & Betty also toyed with politics.  In 1986, Elton ran for Congress and Betty ran for Governor.  Then in 1990, Elton ran for Governor and Betty ran for the U.S. Senate.  Oddly, they lost both times.

In 1991 the couple relocated to Venice Beach, CA after The Arsenio Hall Show aired a video of them performing "I'm in Love with Your Behind".

In Venice Beach, Elton & Betty performed on the boardwalk as "The Married Couple" and launched a strange Public Access TV show called Elton and Betty White Time.

Their notoriety from performing in Venice Beach and on their TV show led to appearances on Sally Jessy Raphael, Maury Povich, and The Daily Show, as well as articles in periodicals such as Variety, LA Weekly, and the French Agence de Presse Photographique

Sadly Betty died in August 2003 at the age of 76.  Elton continues to live in Venice Beach, but he suffered a stroke shortly after Betty's death and has not been able to carry on performing.
